The Horton Fish & Game Club was established in the mid 1940's by John Spence, a local game warden, and Norman Ross, a local outdoorsman. The first meeting was held in the upstairs of Horton City Hall, with approximately 100 local sportsmen in attendance.
The Horton Fish & Game Club still works to maintain and preserve local hunting and fishing habitats 70+ years later. The club's most well known event is the fishing derby held every year on the fourth of July. This annual event has been going on for 50+ years. The fishing derby brings in approximately 200 kids, along with their families every year. Every kid is fortunate enough to be awarded through a raffle from donations held after the derby, which includes candy bars, sodas, fishing tackle, fishing poles, bicycles, World's of Fun/Ocean's of Fun tickets, Royals tickets, a lifetime fishing license and awards for the biggest fish in each age category.
Other events the club has hosted include: various Mud Runs, Demolition Derby (for 15+ years), a community-wide fish fry, Wild-Game feed and an Outdoors Show. The club has also built a handicap accessible dock, a fish cleaning station at the Horton Little Lake and installed Georgia cubes into the little lake for fish habitats. Every year the club holds a raffle for a shotgun or rifle, purchased from local suppliers. The club has also been able to donate to numerous fire victims in the local community.
Each year the club is honored to present a local sportsman who exemplifies outstanding service in the area of outdoors and the community with a Sportsman of the Year Award.
